Coding agents are easier to reason about when we understand both sides of the system: the software repository they work in and the agent loop that reads, plans and uses tools.
Git stores history as objects and references. The Pro Git chapter on Git objects gives the formal explanation; Julia Evans offers a more visual data model for Git.
Sebastian Raschka’s components of a coding agent breaks the system into pieces such as context, tools and the control loop. Anthropic’s guide to effective agents is useful for comparing simple workflows with more autonomous patterns. That guide was published in 2024, so treat it as a design framework and check current documentation for product-specific details.
The Pragmatic Engineer’s Claude Code article is subscriber content. Anthropic’s source-control case study describes Scion and reports a workload that is specific to Anthropic. Its figures are useful context for that case, not an expected baseline for other teams.
Anthropic’s Institute article When AI builds itself reports an 8× change in code merged per engineer per day between Q2 2026 and 2024. The authors explicitly caution that lines of code measure quantity rather than quality. Treat it as one organization’s indicator, not a universal productivity promise.
Use the Problem Lab repository assistant challenge to explore grounded answers, citations and safe boundaries. A team can contribute through research, interface design, documentation, implementation, testing or security review. Keep the prototype read-only and make uncertainty visible.
